STORAGE OF THE 10” DOBSONIAN

I’m lucky in that I have space to place a permanent spot I can leave my scope. As well as the other reasons for choosing a particular scope I have already covered another is the simple logistics of setting up.

Do you have space or storage ? Would you need to lift a heavy scope up and move to site everytime you want to use it, potentially through the house, what weight can you manage. Will your other half give you grief if its in the house? lol.

When I purchased my scope I had a clear idea in my head how I would store and use this particular scope. Apparently, a LOT of people just give up the hobby because of the hassle of setting up. Have a good think on this as ease of use will defo encourage you to use it more.

My solution is simply a large purpose made box at the end of a runway of slabs. The door opens and the whole lot just wheels out. I lock two wheels & it is literally ready to go within 1 minute.

I made the case from 4mm ply, screwed and glued. Most of the joins I have sealed with Evo-STK ‘Sticks like sh*t’. Let me tell you, they aint lying! The door is not hinged but held on with 8 pull down buckles, when closed, these keep the door pressed against the rubber seal.

Yes I know, it looks like an outside loo. haha

The whole lot it slathered in exterior wood paint while the inside has foam stuck to each wall. Two vent holes keeps a flow of air going through the box. Ive also popped in a couple of moisture traps, just to be safe. On the outside I have added a flip up table top for the usual accessories needed, and of course, a hot mug of Yorkshire tea.
